After this, the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the desert. For forty days He prayed and fasted and grew very hungry. The devil thought this was a good time to come and tempt Him.
"If You are the Son of God," he said, "change these stones into loaves of bread."
Jesus answered, "Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God."
Then the devil set Jesus way up on the highest place on top of the Temple. "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down," he said. "The Scriptures say angels will hold You up, in case You hurt Your foot on a stone."
Jesus answered, "The Scriptures also say you must not put the Lord your God to the test."
Next, the devil took Jesus to the top of a high mountain and showed Him all the glorious kingdoms in the world. "I will give You all these," he said, "if You will adore me."
"Away with you, Satan," said Jesus. "It is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God and serve Him only."'
Then the devil left Jesus and angels came and looked after Him.
