+   +   THE END OF THE WORLD   +   +

spirit

Jesus told a parable about the end of the world: "Then the Kingdom of Heaven will be like this: Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five of them were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps, but they did not take oil. The wise ones took their lamps, and also flasks of oil. The bridegroom was late, and they all fell asleep waiting. At midnight there was a cry: 'The bridegroom is here! Go out to meet him!'

All the bridesmaids woke and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise ones, 'Give us some of your oil. Our lamps are going out.' But the wise ones replied, 'There may not be enough for us and for you. You had better go and buy some.' So the foolish bridesmaids set off. While they were gone, the bridegroom came and went in and the door was closed. When they got back, they begged, 'Lord, Lord, open the door.' But he answered, 'I do not know you.' So," Jesus warned, "stay awake and pray always, for you do not know the day or the hour of the end of the world."

"Remember how it was in Lot's day," he told them. "They were eating and drinking and doing all the everyday things. But the day Lot left Sodom, God rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and it destroyed them all. It will be the same on the Last Day. Remember Lot's wife. Anyone who clings to his life will lose it, and he who loses his life will keep it safe."
