One of the Pharisees, called Simon, invited Jesus to dinner. While they were at the table, a woman who was known to be a great sinner came in. She had found out that Jesus was there, and brought some precious oils, in a very expensive flask. She stood behind Jesus, at His feet, weeping, and began to wet His feet with her tears, and wipe them with her hair, and kiss Jesus' feet. Then she poured some of the expensive oil on them.
Simon the Pharisee saw this and thought to himself: if Jesus were really a prophet, He would know what kind of a woman is touching Him this way. He would know that she is sinful.
Jesus answered his thoughts. "Simon, I have something to say to you," He said. "Suppose a man was owed 500 pieces of silver by one man, and 50 pieces of silver by another. When neither of them could pay, he canceled both debts. Which of the debtors will love him more?"
"I suppose the one who had the larger debt canceled," Simon answered.
"You have judged rightly," said Jesus. Then Jesus turned toward the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? When I came into your house, you did not give Me water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You gave Me no kiss, but from the time I came in, she has not stopped kissing My feet. You did not give Me oil, but she poured precious oil on My feet. And so I tell you that her sins, which are so many, are forgiven, for she has loved much; he who is forgiven little, loves little." To the woman He said, "Your sins are forgiven."
Those at the table began saying to each other, "Who is this, Who even forgives sins?"
To the woman, Jesus said, "Your faith has saved you. Go in peace."
