Jesus often criticized the religious leaders of Israel. Once they asked Him to prove Himself to them by giving them some sign. Jesus had already worked many miracles, so they had plenty of signs. They just wanted to put Jesus on the spot. What He was saying about them was true, and it made them most uncomfortable.
This is how Jesus answered them. "Those who ask for a sign are evil, and have no faith. The only sign they will be given is the sign of the prophet Jonah. Jonah was in the belly of the sea-beast for three days and three nights; so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights. The people of Nineveh will condemn such people, because when Jonah preached to them, they were sorry for their sins and asked to be forgiven. Now Someone greater than Jonah is here. The Queen of Sheba will condemn such people, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Now Someone greater than Solomon is here."
