When Jesus heard about this, He went into the desert to be alone for a time. But the crowds followed Him and He was sorry for them. He cured sick people and taught all day. In the evening, His disciples said, "This is a lonely place, and it's getting late. Make everyone go, or they will not reach the town in time to buy food for supper."
"There is no need for them to go," said Jesus. "You give them food." "We have nothing with us," the disciples said, "except five loaves and two fishes." "Bring them to Me," Jesus said, "and make everyone sit on the grass." Then He blessed the loaves and broke them, and gave them to the disciples with the fish.
The disciples began to give out the bread and fish to the people. They gave and gave but there was always more.
After everyone had finished, there were twelve baskets of bread and fish left over. Five thousand men and many women and children had eaten all they could!
