In Gethsemane

spirit

When they came to Gethsemane, Jesus took Peter, James, and John a little apart from the rest. "Stay here and watch with Me," he said. "My soul is sad enough to die." He went a stone's throw further and began to pray. "Father, if it is possible, take this cup from me. But Your will, not Mine be done."

He returned to the three apostles and found them asleep. "Couldn't you watch with Me even for an hour? Watch and pray, that you may not be tempted."

Jesus went back again and prayed as He had before, and again the apostles went to sleep.

He prayed the same prayer a third time and an angel came to strengthen Him. Then He said to the three apostles, "The time has come. The man who is betraying Me is coming now."

As He spoke, Judas came into the garden. With him was a crowd of people carrying swords and clubs.

The high priest had sent them to arrest Jesus. Judas had told them, "The Man I greet with a kiss is the one." He came up to Jesus. "Hail, Master!" he said, and kissed Him. The high priest's servants seized Jesus and held Him fast. Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck one of them. He cut off his ear.

But Jesus said, "Put up your sword. Don't you know that if I asked My Father, He would send twelve legions of angels to rescue Me? Put up your sword." And He healed the servant's ear.

Then He said to the crowd, "You have come here armed with swords and clubs, as if I were a robber. Day after day I sat teaching in the Temple. Why didn't you arrest Me there? But your time has come now, the time of darkness." Then the apostles left Him and ran away.
