Today on Yoga and Me I am posting my open letter to my Russian friend in response to his news that he is planning to join – and, God willing marry into! - a flourishing community in Russia which lives according to the spiritual tradition of hesychasm – as we did in our community where Dr. Herbert Schwartz was our staretz. Co-incidentally, a piece addressing the same issues I did in this regard appeared this morning on the site Voices from Russia. On Theophany, this past week, this being the feast of my Mama’s falling asleep, I begged of her something sorely, indeed desperately, needful in our world today. The agenda of our new president, Barack Obama, holds promise – but only if we can build it on such an infrastructure as I prayed for. I just now clipped an article from today’s New York Times which quoted Marcelo M. Suárez-Orozco, the co-director of immigration studies at New York University and co-author of “Learning a New Land — Immigrant Students in American Society” (Harvard Press, 2008) as saying our immigrant children are “assimilating to a society that parents see as very threatening and frightening. It’s anti-authority, anti-studying. It’s materialistic.” America remains (maybe – if the “stimulus package” works!) a land of economic opportunity, but not only the whole wide world outside the US (we could start with Gaza right at present) see US – and Iraeli, Israel being our client-state – as possessed by values – or, better, non-values, anti-values – which are threatening and frightening to sane minded people who wish to preserve their humanity. And in response Mama sent the miracle which alone can save our broken world – if we ourselves use it to grow and help one another to grow in God’s gift of what in the Greek is called “theosis”. I’m sure there is a Sanskrit word for it also, it can be variously expressed, but will bear fruit only if we live it Mama’s miracle: An Orthodox Pope! Read all about it!!!! The Vatican, having relentlessly attacked human dignity with their obdurate campaign of condemnation and contempt – a current Time article is on: “Teens' Latest Self-Injury Fad: Self-Embedding” by Tiffany Sharples – has now issued a detailed set of further condemnations for those who, like these teens, draw the inexorable conclusion, to wit, that everyone is just a “mass of cells”.
