THE PROPHECIES OF THE MESSIAH

spirit

Through all the many hundreds of years, there were always wise and holy men among the Israelites. God listened to these holy men when they begged Him to forgive the sins of His people. God also sent prophets to tell His people that He would send them a Messiah, who would save them from their sins once and for all. As it came closer and closer to the time when the Messiah was to be born, God sent more and more prophets, and they told the people more and more clearly what the Messiah would be like, so that they would know him when he came.

+ + + Isaiah + + +

One of the greatest of the prophets was Isaiah. One day when Isaiah was in the Temple he saw God on a high throne. Above Him were seraphs - their name means "burning ones" - and each seraph had six wings. With two wings the seraph covered its face, because God is too great to look upon. With two wings it covered its feet, and the other two wings were for flying.

The seraphs were singing to one another:

Holy! Holy! Holy!

Lord of Sabaoth!

Heaven and Earth of Full of Thy Glory!

The temple was filled with smoke, like the cloud that rested on the tabernacle when God was leading His people to the Promised Land. Isaiah knew that he was not perfect, and he was very frightened to be standing before the all holy God, Whom even the seraphs did not dare to look upon. But one of the seraphs flew to him holding a burning coal in his hand, that he had taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched Isaiah's lips with the burning coal, and said to him, "Now your sin is taken away."

Then Isaiah heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send?" Isaiah answered, "Here I am, send me." God did send Isaiah, to warn the people to be sorry for their sins, because soon the holy Messiah would come.

"The Lord Himself will give you a sign," Isaiah said to the king. "Behold a virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel." This is one of the names given the Messiah because it means "God is with us".

At the end of Isaiah's book is this message from God:

Heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool.

What is the house you would build for Me?

All these things My hand has made, so all these things are Mine.

This is the man My eyes are drawn to: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, who trembles at My word.

When I called, no one answered, I spoke and they would not listen.

Listen to the word of God, you who tremble at His word.

Those who hate you say "So let God show His glory," but it is they who will be put to shame.

Long before being in labor, she has given birth, brought forth a son.

Who ever heard of such a thing, who ever saw anything like this?

Is a land born in one moment?

Is a nation brought forth all at once?

For only just in labor, Zion brought forth her sons.

Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her, all you who love her, so that you may nurse from her breast, drink deeply of her glory.

I will send peace, flowing to her like a river, and the wealth of nations, like an overflowing stream.

You will nurse from her breast, and be carried upon her hip, and fondled in her lap.

As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you.

You will be comforted in Jerusalem.

For as the new heavens and the new earth I will make will remain before Me - it is the Lord Who speaks - so will your children and your children's children, and your name, remain.
